U.S. Navy Vet Now Franchise Owner with Wild Bird Centers of America

U.S. Navy Vet Now Franchise Owner with Wild Bird Centers of America

GLEN ECHO, MARYLAND  / PRBuzz.com / February 1, 2012 -- The Wild Bird Centers of America (www.wildbird.com) is pleased to report that franchise owner, Bill Hager, proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the submarine USS Ethan Allen (www.hullnumber.com/SSBN-608). The USS Ethan Allen was the first ship of the Navy's second generation of nuclear-powered, fleet ballistic missile submarines and the second ship in the Navy to bear the name.

As a submariner, Bill performed many duties aboard the USS Ethan Allen including serving many shifts as a helmsman. As is common with many who served in the Navy, Bill saw many parts of the world. His duty stations included Pearl Harbor, Guam and Bangor, WA. The USS Ethan Allen was decommissioned in 1983 but Bill readily remembers his six hours on, twelve hours off shifts at sea.

After leaving the Navy, Bill attended the University of Northern Colorado to study anthropology. After college, Bill and his wife, Anne Dolan, moved to Seattle, where Bill worked as a bookstore manager for both Crown Books and Brentano's. In 2010, Bill left the book industry to open his own Wild Bird Center franchise (www.wildbird.com/kirkland), located in Kirkland, WA in the Seattle suburbs. Bill admits his timing could have been better, opening a retail store at the beginning of a recession, but through his determination and perseverance, saw sales in 2011 increase 40% over the previous year.

According to George Petrides, Jr., CEO of the Wild Bird Centers of America, "We are proud to be part of the VetFran program, actively seeking veterans to own and operate their own Wild Bird Center business. To be a successful franchise owner requires leadership skills, discipline, and a strong work ethic. Not surprisingly, many veterans feel these skills are precisely the attributes military service helped them develop. We see those skills in the Wild Bird Center franchise owners like Bill Hager with military experience so Petrides believes strongly that many veterans interested in nature and business will find a Wild Bird Center franchise a great fit.

The Wild Bird Centers of America (www.facebook.com/wildbirdcenters) is a national franchise and dealership system supporting wild bird and nature specialty stores throughout the United States and Canada. For franchise information, contact Jeff Young, Director of Franchise Development at jeff at wildbird.com or (301) 841-6405.

How to Make a Jacob's Ladder: Chained Lightning

How to Make a Jacob's Ladder: Chained Lightning

In this article, I'll show you how to create a simple yet accurate demonstration of the "rising ionized gas" principle. In other words, a transformer, two metal prongs and lots of evil laughter. Remember those large "towers" in the background of Frankenstein movies with a "lightning bolt" rising upwards every few seconds? That's called a Jacob's Ladder; one of the coolest awe-inspiring demonstrations of high voltage. Here's a video of the final product:

Materials and Tools

1) A neon sign transformer. These are quite difficult to find, but with determination and a little patience, nothing is impossible. Try asking for an old one at a neon sign shop, or just keep your eyes open for a warehouse renovation/sign replacement, often the ones removed work just fine. They look something like this:

2) Some straight copper tubing or thick wire (available at most any hardware stores).

3) 1' long two-by-four (purchase at a hardware store, they'll probably just give it to you).

4) Two 1" screws.

5) Insulated wire.

6) Screw-on wire connectors (available at most hardware stores, they look like this):

7) Pliers.

8) Screwdrivers (depending on the two screws mentioned earlier).

Procedure

1) Cut two equal lengths of wire or copper tubing at around 3' each (or longer, depends on your preference).

2) Secure them to the wood like so:

3) Bend an indent in the wires, like so:

4) Attach the HV output lines from your transformer to each copper tube (or wire) as seen in the photo above.

5) VERY CAREFULLY, use trial and error to find the perfect distance of the spark gap and distance of the "V" arc guides.

6) Laugh madly! >:D

Warnings

  • DO NOT attempt this unless you are experienced in electricity, high voltage, and safety around lethal levels of power!
  • NEVER touch the Jacob's Ladder or arc while the transformer is on!
  • Don't bring electronics near the Ladder in case of electrical damage.
  • I am not responsible for any harm or damage you cause!

Astronomical Observing News (02/01 - 02/06)

Astronomical Observing News (02/01 - 02/06)

This week's AON might be a little short, but finally, the Garradd comet's peak has come! I picked the Garradd comet to follow because it's a bright and easy-to-follow comet. Be sure to observe it! If you need help finding it, you can find more information here.

  • Until March: The Garradd comet's peak is this month! Be sure to observe it!

  • February 3: Moon is at its most northern declination.
  • February 4: Io occultation, Europa transit.
  • February 6: Io and Europa eclipses.

Below I have defined some of the events I will be notifying you about over the course of this repeating feature:

  • Transit—When an astronomical object passes in front of another, like one of Jupiter's moons passing in front of Jupiter.
  • Occultation—When one object is hidden by another object that passes between it and the observer.
  • Moon Phases—It can be fun observing different phases of the moon. These are what fraction of the moon is dark. It is also fun observing the dark side.
  • Conjunctions—Two (or more) bright objects in one field of view! This is when two or more astronomical objects are relatively close. Sometimes it is cool to see planets or bright stars pass by or behind the moon.
  • Apogee or Perigee—This is when the moon is closest or furthest away from Earth. Not really for observing, but it can be interesting to view the moon when it is large and small.
  • Meteor Showers—Easily observed by the naked eye or by binoculars.
  • Comets—Not very often do these come around, but are amazing to watch.
  • Lunar and Solar Eclipses—Mainly these are lunar eclipses, but if you get to see a solar eclipse you are very lucky!  This is when an astronomical object passes into a shadow of another.  This could be Jupiter's moons passing into its shadow, or vice versa.
  • Solstices—This is when the Earth wobbles, or from Earth this is how the northernmost or southernmost point the sun is at. There are two each year. This is mainly for information.
  • Equinoxes—This is when the earth is in the middle of its southernmost and northernmost position and it is equal. Again, this is mainly for knowledge.
  • Declination of Moon—This is when the moon's path around the Earth is slightly tilted up or down. The declination is the furthest up or down it will go.

There may be more to come. When these are included, I will explain what they are.

T-Mobile's Sensation 4G and myTouch not quite ready for EOL

Android Central

A few days back a leaked T-Mobile USA inventory screen seemed to suggest several of the carrier's mid to high-end Android phones would soon be reaching end-of-life (EOL) status. Today, however, an updated inventory screen has emerged over at TmoNews, indicating that the HTC Sensation 4G, myTouch Q and myTouch 4G Slide still have a few months of shelf life left in them. The devices are marked as "sell through", meaning that they haven't yet reached EOL, but that production will soon be coming to a end.

There's no such luck for the HTC Amaze 4G or LG DoublePlay, though, as today's leaked screenshot reveals that those devices have now reached EOL. But as we said earlier this week, EOL status doesn't affect software updates or warranties, and really isn't worth worrying about in our opinion. Your phone doesn't suddenly become any less awesome because of three letters in a spreadsheet, and we'd still expect devices like the Amaze to get ICS in due course.

Motorola Droid 4 lands on Verizon's Droid Does site

Android Central

As the Motorola Droid 4 inches closer to release, the device has taken its place on Verizon's "Droid Does" site, rubbing shoulders with the likes of the Droid RAZR and Droid Xyboard. You'll find the usual teaser content, as well as a rundown of specifications for Verizon's first 4G LTE QWERTY slider. As we saw during our hands-on time with the Droid 4 at CES, the phone sports a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU and a full gigabyte of RAM, just like the Droid RAZR. The Droid 4 sets itself apart from older Droid models with its laser-cut, edge-lit keys, and differentiates itself from most modern smartphones just by having a QWERTY keyboard. The site itself even acknowledges “the decline of other fixed QWERTY devices”.

Display-wise, you’ve got a 4-inch qHD (960x540) panel with Gorilla Glass and “splash-resistant nanotechnology”. And on the software side you’ll find Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, along with Motorola’s Motoblur Philblur UI. Moto’s Smart Actions app is also included, which should help with conserving battery life and automating common tasks, and you also get streaming capabilities through MOTOCAST. We’d expect an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to be on the cards for the Droid 4, too.

There’s no official release date for the Droid 4 just yet, though unconfirmed rumors point to a launch later this month. And with Verizon starting to promote the device on DroidDoes.com, it certainly looks like we could be seeing it sooner rather than later.

Hit the source link to check it out for yourself -- if you’re eager to pick one of these up, you can also sign up for updates at the bottom of the page. Be sure to check out our full hands-on with the Droid 4 from CES for more info.
