Pwn2Own, one of the most anticipated hacking contests that takes place each year at the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, is set to unfold under dramatically different rules this year.

Nokia has been fined by Australian regulators for spamming its customers with text messages, Reuters reports. The company will have to pay AUS$55,000 for sending SMS marketing messages for its products and services alongside "tips" on how customers can best use their phones, but without offering a way to unsubscribe to the messages.

The Department of Justice (DoJ) has charged John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer, with leaking classified information to journalists.

Kiriakou, who worked for the CIA from 1990 to 2004, was charged with disclosing classified information, including the name of a covert CIA officer and information revealing the role of another CIA employee in classified activities, the DoJ said in a statement.

Linux vendors are rushing to patch a privilege escalation vulnerability in the Linux kernel that can be exploited by local attackers to gain root access on the system.

The vulnerability, which is identified as CVE-2012-0056, was discovered by Jüri Aedla and is caused by a failure of the Linux kernel to properly restrict access to the "/proc/<pid>/mem" file.
