VIENNA, (MMD Newswire) January 24, 2012 -- The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatović, today called for governments to reassess protection of intellectual property rights online, emphasizing the potential threat to individual freedoms posed by expanding legal rights and technological restrictions.
"Guaranteeing freedom of expression and intellectual property rights is important for a thriving creative industry in our information societies," Mijatović said. "At the same time, copyright laws should be limited in time and scope, encourage innovation and not hinder the free flow of information and freedom of speech, especially on the Internet and across borders."
"Mandatory monitoring of Internet content for copyright infringements could have a chilling effect on users engaging in political discourse."
She added that the recent debate over the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) in the United States and the continuing discussion on the draft European Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) shows that there is an urgent need to reassess the design and scope of international intellectual property rights in the digital age.
"Under no circumstances should the interests of rights holders be placed above the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the right to privacy. We need a new balance between the legitimate rights of the copyright holders and the creative exercise of everyone's right to freedom of expression in the public domain."
"I call on all OSCE participating States to come up with new approaches to protect both fundamental freedoms and intellectual property rights. These should reflect the spirit and pace of the digital age we are living in," she said.
Mijatović urged governments to reconsider their Internet strategies, keeping in mind its borderless nature to ensure that the Internet remains an open and public forum for freedom of expression for their citizens, in line with OSCE commitments and international standards of media freedom.
"Governments must be aware that every attempt to regulate the Internet on the national level inevitably has global implications - because we still are fortunate to have only one Internet. Any online regulation should thus be considered carefully and debated openly, including with the industry, civil society, media and governments, in order to ensure that it does not lead to fragmentation or to cutting off users and interrupting the free flow of information," she said.

Vancouver (MMD Newswire) January 24, 2012 -- The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, today addressed the B.C. Chamber of Commerce and the Association for Mineral Exploration of B.C.'s Mineral Exploration RoundUp 2012. The Minister highlighted the importance of innovation in the exploration and mining sectors and the need to diversify our energy markets.Speaking to the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, Minister Oliver outlined the importance of opening Canada's natural resources sectors to new markets, such as the Asia-Pacific region.
"Vancouver is one of Canada's great economic engines and our biggest gateway to the huge economic opportunities of the growing Asia-Pacific market," Minister Oliver said. "Those opportunities represent the potential for hundreds of thousands of jobs in Canada and literally trillions of dollars in economic activity in Vancouver, in B.C. and right across the country."
In his address to the RoundUp participants, Minister Oliver detailed how NRCan's Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals program is supporting private sector exploration investment in the North by generating modern reconnaissance-level geo-mapping data in areas with high mineral potential. He also noted that, in regions of Canada with proven mineral potential, the department's Targeted Geoscience Initiative is developing innovative mineral exploration techniques to help the industry discover new deeply buried mineral deposits in Canada.
Minister Oliver discussed NRCan's public geoscience programs while touring the RoundUp Trade Show floor, where he met with the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada's 2011 Prospector of the Year, Shawn Ryan, whose use of NRCan's geoscientific data and knowledge products contributed to his White Gold discovery in the Yukon.
"Canada is one of the world's mining and energy giants, and we're set for continued growth," said Minister Oliver. "Our Government is committed to developing the policy initiatives and making the targeted investments that will help to ensure our exploration, mining and energy industries continue to grow and prosper long into the future."
While in Vancouver, the Minister also met with Western Canada-based mining industry CEOs as well as with B.C. Premier, Christy Clark; NWT Premier, Bob McLeod; and B.C. Minister of Energy and Mines, Rich Coleman. They discussed various opportunities to work together to harness science and technology expertise and to improve policy in support of ensuring economic stability and the responsible development of Canada's natural resources.

Chicago, IL / PRBuzz.com / January 24, 2012 -- Back In the summer of 2003 a local teacher from Chicago was picked out of many professional hitting coaches to be Ted Williams sons' personal hitting coach. At the time, John Henry Williams was 35 years old and wanted to to give professional baseball a try. He believed if he found someone who knew his fathers' swing as well as his late father did, then he had a chance to do well. Ted Williams Hitting Specialist Mike "Hubie Magic" Huber was the coach that was eventually hired for the job. Huber who has worked with over 70 different travel, high school, and college teams as a team hitting specialist, recalls the intensity of the interview process and how he eventually was selected. Huber said, "I was asked over 100 questions about the swing." After answering all of the questions, Huber was then put under a physical test and was asked to hit batting practice off of 90 MPH pitching. "I had to hit off some machine that was worth over $100,000 and threw nasty curves, sliders, change-ups, and fork balls." Huber explained. After passing these tests, Huber thought for sure that he would get the job but he was then psycholigically evaluated by a psychologist to see if if the candidate was of sound mind. Huber ended up getting the job even though he wasn't a recognized pro name."I certainly did not expect that I would have to go through something like this with a job interview, but I went with the flow because I did think there was a strong possibility that I could get him to hit. I knew he was 35 years old, played no college ball. He certainly did not have a great high school career either. There was something that I liked about the challenge of getting him to hit at the pro level though." The story of how this relationship between Huber and John Henry is written in Huber's book, Tapping into the Spirit of Ted Williams. Huber says people will be surprised of how the story ends as it never made any public news. So far, most people that read the book comment on how it unravels like a Hollywood movie." About Mike Huber: Team Hitting Specialist and Confidence Trainer, Mike Huber, has traveled the country to help baseball teams improve their hitting skills at a record breaking pace with the Hubie Magic Training System. This training system has helped teams set over 60 state, national, and/or team hitting records while training over 70 different teams since the late 1990s. He is the author of the book, Tapping Into the Spirit of Ted Williams. Mr. Huber, a Chicagonative, has been a radio show analyst of ESPN radio, is a public speaker, holds his masters at Chicago State University in Physical Wellness and Kinetics, and has written many articles on the subject of hitting. Press Inquiries: Mike Huber is available for television, radio, newspaper, magazine and on-line interviews, articles and speaking engagements. Contact: Mike Huber Email:
